Big East Expansion and Scheduling Talk: Army and Navy

In another instance of "If you talk about it on the CollegeSportsInfo.com Message Boards, It will Happen", there is a potential change to the Big East being discussed by league officials. When the Big East lost (3) members to the ACC and made it's replacement picks, there were many on this site who thought the most logical fix would be to bring in Army and Navy for football-only. This would allow the Big East to have either 9-10 members meaning that 8 conference games would be quite easy. Maiking even more sense are that Army and Navy are the only other FBS football programs within the center of the Big East footprint that are not in the Big East (outside of Boston College and Maryland which are in the ACC).

So it seems that the Big East is exploring a deal with Army and Navy in which each school would play (4) Big East conference games each year. So if Army were to play UConn, Syracuse, Rutgers and Pitt, then Navy would play USF, Louisville, Cincinnati, and WVU. Army and Navy would swap opponents the following season.

We'll keep you posted as this develops.

All of them already have programs or are in the talks about bringing back or adding a football program.

Joining the Great West today is a sextet of universities — Utah Valley, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas Pan American, Houston Baptist and New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Chicago State and Seattle are expected to follow soon into the Great West Conference; Cal State Bakersfield, Longhurst and Savannah State are said to have declined their invitations in hopes of aligning themselves in other conferences.

Officially announced Feb. 25, 2004, the GWFC's six charter-members universities were Southern Utah, Cal Poly, UC Davis, Northern Colorado, North Dakota State and South Dakota State. The latter three have since moved or announced intentions to move to other conferences.

UTPA to the Great West

As mentioned in the CollegeSportsInfo.com post on UTPA & the Great West, there have been recent discussions by the Great West football conference about expanding to all sports. This came to be known with UT-PA seeking a conference home.

Now it looks to be official:

Action 4 Sports now has a date for an important athletics announcement from the University of Texas-Pan American.

The Rio Grande Valley university's athletic program has gone without a conference affiliation for the past decade.

But UTPA administrators have changed that.

They recently joined the Great West Conference.

The Broncs are now expected to hold press conference to discuss their admission on July 11 at 10 a.m.
